"My back hurts!"

For about the past two weeks Margaret has been complaining on and off (but daily) about her low back hurting. Initially, I was surprised to hear my two year old complain of back pain and since it went along with some more frequent wetting accidents we went to the doctor to make sure it was not a UTI. It was not. To make sure she was not teasing me I have tried to down play it when she fussed and not asked her about her back. She continued to complain.
Since it had gone on so consistently (same time of day, same area of pain) and for so long I called the doctor again on Monday and talked to the nurse. She decided that we needed to be seen. Yesterday, Wednesday, ended up being a VERY long day.
We got to the doctor a little before 9 and Margaret was great for the appointment. The doctor poked and prodded and asked lots of questions. Margaret Pee-peed in a cup (again) and was very proud! After her assessment, the doctor was concerned enough about Margaret's complaints to send us to the hospital for a work up! She said she wanted to rule out some scary things that I will not even mention. I was a quite freaked out!
We went to admissions and waited, then went to x-rayand waited again. Margaret was a little champ for the two x-rays of her back. She did exactly what the tech asked of her and was very still even though it was evident that she was a little scared. The tech was nice enough to let me glance at the x-rays, even though she was not supposed to....after I looked I wished I had not. I saw what I thought was an obvious abnormality--but I did not know what it meant. Knowing just a little, and thinking you know more is NEVER good.
Next, we were sent to the lab to give A LOT of blood (enough for several tests to be run). We waited and waited and waited. Finally, just as Margaret and I had both had enough it was our turn. She was crying before they even started because she was so tired. The nurse did get the vein on the first stick-thank goodness-but filling up both viles with blood took a while, especially for a sweet, patient child who had a needle in her arm and who had had ENOUGH! Anyway, but the end of it both of us were crying. Margaret wet her pants she was so upset!
Finally, we went home. For the past few days Margaret has not had an appetite so I tried to get her to eat lunch and then put her down for nap. She did take a great nap--but that gave me quiet time to worry! I looked on the internet at pictures of x-rays to find out what I thought I saw meant. Take my word for it, NEVER DO THAT! I was so glad when Margaret woke up!
The doctor called a little after 5 to let us know that the x-rays were clear. The blood test had one abnormality so she wants to run it again. YUCK! We go to do that on Monday. I hope this means that we are pretty much in the clear??
However, today Margaret has been rather puny and complained about her back hurting more than any other day previously. Is it because we were at the doctor/hospital so long yesterday investigating the problem? Does it REALLY, REALLY hurt? And WHY? These are all questions that are currently plaguing me.
So, this is my request for anyone who reads this blog....if you know anything about back pain or have any ideas or input regarding this problem--LET US KNOW! Hopefully, we are really over-reacting. I just want her to feel better, although, until the past few days the complaints have not really interupted her happy, playful little self. Any words of wisdom are appreciated. If you have no wisdom, we also appreciate prayers.

Wow! I did not see this earlier. I would be going out of my mind! The only advice I can give is to follow your gut! It is much better to make a mountain out of a mole hill in order to make sure there is nothing wrong than to just let it go & later regret it. After all, isn't that why we have insurance? :) If there is anything I can do please let me know! Poor little Margaret! I know about xrays & having blood drawn. It is so hard to watch your little ones be forced to sit still whilel someone tortures them. You are a GREAT Mom & I know you'll do what's right for your little angel!

Melanie-
If she keeps complaining make the Drs. keep checking! Better safe than sorry. Let us know how it is going.
